Cycling a marine aquarium is essential to establish a healthy environment for your fish. Learn the step-by-step process to properly cycle your saltwater tank.
Cycling your marine aquarium is a crucial step that establishes the biological filtration needed to keep fish healthy. Here’s a step-by-step guide to cycling your marine tank:
Step 1: Set Up the Tank
Start by adding live rock or live sand. This introduces beneficial bacteria that help start the nitrogen cycle.
Step 2: Add an Ammonia Source
Use fish food or pure ammonia to introduce an ammonia source. Beneficial bacteria will convert ammonia into nitrites, then into less harmful nitrates.
Step 3: Monitor the Cycle
Test the water for ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates. You’ll first see an ammonia spike, followed by a nitrite spike, and finally rising nitrates.
Step 4: Perform a Water Change
Once ammonia and nitrites reach zero, perform a partial water change to reduce nitrate levels.
Step 5: Add Fish Slowly
After cycling, introduce fish gradually. Adding too many fish at once can overwhelm the filtration system.
